Please make it stop…

Tonight marked the return of America’s favorite past time…incredibly untalented people getting their 15 minutes…aka…American Idol.  Simon Cowell is gone, as are Ellen DeGeneres (who my wife and I loved, btw), and Kara Dia-whoever.  The panel is back to just 3 judges: Randy “Yo Dog” Jackson, JLo, and Steven Tyler.

Simon’s crass-ness is definitely missed, but not for too long.  The judge-carousel has been something I’ve gotten used to over the past few years, so half the time I kept expecting him to show up mid-show in his stretch limo and deep-V and take up his spot at the end of the table.  But alas, it was not to be.  This first show is the time when the judges get to created their “personas” that they will carry through the remainder of the show.  I actually didn’t mind JLo or STyler for the most part and don’t think they’ll detract from the show at all.  It looks like Randy has taken up Simon’s spot and will be the “Mean One” of the group.  JLo picks up where Paula left off a couple years ago as the “Kind One”, and STyler has created a new role as “Resident Creepster”.  The guy couldn’t pass a single 16 year-old without making some sexual comment or innuendo.

I have to be honest and say that I have a very strong love/hate relationship with this show.  I love the show in the fact that this show offers a great opportunity for undiscovered, talented people to shine and be “discovered”.  However, I am always incredibly amazed at the amount of people that put themselves out there who obviously have no singing talent whatsoever. As a singer/performer, it is incredibly difficult to watch.  I just never could understand how they don’t know they can’t sing!

And these first few weeks of shows are the WORST!  Most of the performers that you get to see and hear are the worst of the bunch.  I guess most people like that and think it’s hilarious.  And don’t get me wrong, some are.  But most just make my head hurt.

So, in order to make these first shows bearable, my wife and I always make a game out of it and try to guess which contestants that make it to Hollywood will make the Top 10.  There was maybe one girl this episode.
